2 out of 5 stars For Casual Players ONLY!!   March 13, 2009

Don't be fooled, this not as great as the GC version. It's overly simplified for the gamers groomed on Wii sports. You control your characters movements with the Wii mote, however the ball goes in the direction suggested by your swing. Which sounds great and is, in small doses, but the game dosen't reach the fun or intensity level of being more specific with your shot direction. Many times the ball will automatically move toward your opponent despite the swinging motion. Which is a downer, because the whole point of tennis is to hit the ball AWAY from your opponent! This fault is too critical to ignore, and I reall wanted to like this game. But it's clear it was retooled for simpler games and less complex matches. If your looking for such a game, then this version of mario tennis is for you. But, if your looking for something with a little more depth and replayability do what I did, and just dust off the GC version and pop it in for an intense experience.

Having the Gamecube version of this game, I was very excited to see they would be adding new motion controls for the Wii. The Gamecube version is probably one of the best tennis games I have ever played. I popped in the game last night and was very disappointed from the start. The motion controls don't work the way they should. I tried to do a slice shot, and my character did a lob shot. I tried to do a weak drop shot, and my character did a smash shot. The controls aren't very responsive, and when you're in the middle of a match, it can be frustrating. I like in the Gamecube version, you can use your control stick to aim your shots (left or right). For the Wii, you aim your shot with your timing of your shot. It works great in the Wii Sports Tennis, but not here. Do yourself a favor and bid on Mario Tennis for the Gamecube and play it on the Wii with a Gamecube controller.

4 out of 5 stars play controls aren't bad if you use the nunchuck too   March 15, 2009

I'd like to begin by saying that my kids and I have never played this game on the GC. I did not like this game at first, either, because of the play control with just the Wiimote. It is awkward, and at some points you lose sight of why you hit the ball. However, after plugging in the nunchuck, I was able to get separate swing and body motion control (swing=Wiimote, nunchuck=body motion). It's a similar setup to Mario Super Sluggers, where more casual players can hit and pitch while other players can have better control by using both devices. The game itself has a few very fun minigames, a good tournament and exhibition section, neat courses with clever twists (I never played tennis with a crocodile on my ankle before), cool graphics, and just general Mario fun. The speech messages sent to the remote when you win or lose are great also. It's a good Wii port of a good game.

4 out of 5 stars Depends on your expectations   June 4, 2009

So many reviews, here and elsewhere, compare this game to the GC version. We never had a GC, an XBox, PlayStation, or any other video game system before buying the Wii. We are in our 50's and have no kids (hence no grandkids). We enjoy Wii Sports. We got Mario Kart Racing and thought it was silly and fun. I bought Power Tennis because it seemed like more fun silliness.

If you take your video games seriously and/or typically spend hours at a time every day playing them, then this certainly will disappoint. As a way to have some fun for a short period a few times a week, not to mention be on your feet burning a few calories, this is a fun game. I'm sure the novelty will wear off, but by then we will have more than gotten our money's worth out of it, fun-wise.

This is a really fun way to play video tennis. A wide variety of characters to choose from, each with their own personality and tennis ability. The graphics are fantastic and look great on a wide screen HD TV. The "play control" takes a little getting use to, but if you use full motions for each of the strokes you want to use it's much easier than trying abbreviated movements. The "power shot" is a bit much, and I prefer playing the game with it turned off. I guess I'm a tennis realist, per se, and want to win the point without the gimmicks. There are a wide variety of playing courts and court surfaces. The ball action appears to be true to form is you are playing on clay, grass, carpet or hard courts. You can also play a night game also. This game makes for fun play at parties also, getting doubles play going. I also like that you have the option of playing singles, instead of being stuck with two of you on the same side of the net playing pseudo doubles (since both of your Miis move at the same time even though you are doing a net shot or a ground stroke from the baseline. Highly recommend this game.
